First to say thanks visiting our website and for the interest in out project. We set out to have as accurate homage to the originals as possible (body, chassis, suspension, cockpit, pedals etc) but accepting that we had to compromise on engine choice, as original Flat 12 engines and transmissions are in excess of £1.3Million!
My personnel design brief for the project was to create a road legal car so I could cause chaos on the UK roads, but also a great handing track day car that I could drive to tracks such as Brands where it all started back in April 1970. In parallel create as accurate homage to the originals as possible (chassis, suspension, cockpit, pedals etc) but accepting that we had to compromise on engine choice due to original engine costs.
The only engine option to keep the link to Porsche and the original air-cooled originals was to use an air-cooled 964 3.6L engine and inverted G50 transmission. This has proved beneficial as the car has been accepted by the Porsche UK club and I get invited to display at various events, see the Events tab on our website for a summary of the major events and displays attended.
My engine was rebuilt to standard specification with various improvements to reduce emissions to pass the UK Road Legal IVA test, by my partner in the project John Hartland. This standard but rebuilt configuration is producing approx. 270bhp @ 6800rpm. Weight with 65 Litres of fuel and 15 Litres of oil is approx. 920Kg.
Performance on the rather busy UK roads is more than sufficient for me, as corners like a big go-kart. But if you wanted a track focused car, then we can uprate the Flat 6 engines, and if required add a pair of 993 GT2 K24 turbochargers to take the power to 600BHP plus, which is similar to the originals. This would add approx. £50K for an NA 3.8L, and £150K for a twin turbo installation.
Regards our body panels these came from moulds taken from David Pipers original 917-010, so visually correct and we have moulds taken from my panels, so customer cars look 99% correct to the original 1970 917K's.
Chassis 001 (my personnel car) has now completed 8200 miles without any major issues, with approx. 7500 on the UK (and French) roads and 700 miles on UK tracks. This includes trips into central London and a 900mile trip to the Le Mans Classic in June, see the Events tab on our website for a summary of the major events and displays attended.
The exterior livery and interior trim can be fully personalised – Customers may request a specific historic livery, and we can arrange wrapping for these (subject to brand rights to reproduce colours/logos). Damper and spring rate are adjustable, with brake, wheel and tyre options. Seat trim colours and materials are bespoke, and we can quote a full leather interior.
Deposits and quarterly payments for any of the options above would be sent to my UK registered company for which I can supply details and can be checked on the UK company's house website. VAT is applicable to UK sales, but for sales outside the UK VAT is not applicable. But deposits and stage payments need to come from Europe and the completed car or components need to be shipped out of the UK within a reasonable period after completion. And we need documentary proof such as copies of the import paperwork into Europe which is aligned with the total purchase cost to present to the UK VAT authorities.
At Icon Engineering we are open to discussing and can supply detailed quotes for above options. Please contacts us to discuss what is required, and if feasible.
